Officially, as of Sep 6, 2021, more than 415,000 COVID-19 cases and 15,800 deaths have been reported in Myanmar - but the real numbers are likely far higher as there’s a lack of testing and medical care especially in more rural areas. After the military coup on Feb 1, 2021, healthcare workers joined civil servants and bankers in the civil disobedience movement (CDM) against military rule. With many doctors on strike, and in hiding against military reprisal, state hospitals and clinics have been closed. Over 100 CDM doctors have reportedly been arrested as ‘enemies of the state’. But what this means is that the sick are left to struggle on or die at home. One doctor explains that while he has blamed the previous National League for Democracy for its poor handling of the second COVID wave, it pales next to the military's actions that have included the killing of some 1,000 civilians in crackdowns on street protests. “I’m determined not to return to work while the country is under the military rule," he said. But he makes house calls secretly to help the sick. Humanitarian crises and public health experts have pointed out that the military rulers are not equipped to handle the pandemic. Dr Simon Adams, Executive Director at Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) says that “the military lacks the capacity, legitimacy, and the will to actually confront this COVID-19 wave in any real and reasonable way.” WATCH the full episode of Myanmar In Crisis: Can The International Community Do More?: https://youtu.be/5NLP6QJ_0x4 ALSO WATCH: Military In Politics: Myanmar https://youtu.be/iuINrF4ycyI Defending Myanmar's Democracy: The Protestors, The Peaceful & The Fallen: https://youtu.be/hdQTcH2FrlE Beyond Borders: Myanmar Refugees Seek Chance At Better Life : https://youtu.be/ea6-FEFCYqg For more, SUBSCRIBE to CNA INSIDER! https://cna.asia/insideryoutubesub Follow CNA INSIDER on: Instagram: https://ift.tt/2C3sZiR Facebook: https://ift.tt/2PPEuNA Website: https://cna.asia/cnainsider
