Trying To Start My Own Business After Being Retrenched Is Harder Than It Looks

With many job losses during this COVID-19 pandemic, some of those retrenched have resorted to becoming entrepreneurs, like running a home-based food business, to survive. But not everyone is cut out for it. Rattanaporn ‘Air’ Phumman used to be a business development director in an events company in Bangkok. She was let go in November 2020 when her company wound down amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Alba Lau was a cabin crew member with Cathay Dragon in Hong Kong before she was let go in October 2020. Air, the main breadwinner in her family, started a homemade chilli paste business with her mother's help. Alba joined her brother’s toilet seat company, sourcing for her own clients who needed toilet seats installed. Among other things, both turned to social media like Facebook. But after a few months, Alba admitted she was not cut out to be an entrepreneur and was “90% desperate because I am not sure about my career path anymore. I feel hopeless.” Both ultimately went back to becoming full-time salaried employees, Air with an NGO and Alba with a children enrichment centre.
