The European Union has ambitious plans to make Europe super green with cleaner environment, new green jobs, and better quality of life for Europeans. But critics say this is protectionism, making it much tougher for Asian companies to sell goods to Europe. Indonesia and Malaysia are the world’s biggest producers of palm oil, which is used in nearly everything from pizza and chocolate to shampoos, from animal feed to biofuel in cars. The EU says oil palm plantation firms are guilty of terrible deforestation so the oil should be banned as a biofuel. Europe’s powerful Climate Chief Frans Timmermans tells CNA palm oil will remain a controversial issue between the EU and Indonesia and Malaysia. Timmermans, who is formerly Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, is seen as incredibly articulate and the one who gets the difficult jobs done.
