Interracial Couples React To Viral Racist Video

On June 5, 2020, Dave Parkash was out with his girlfriend Jacqueline Ho when a stranger confronted the interracial couple, telling them that it was a "disgrace" for a Chinese girl and an Indian man to be together. The verbal abuse was captured on a video that went viral. The self-proclaimed racist was identified as Tan Boon Lee, then a lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He has since apologised for his racist remarks. (https://cna.asia/3AIOuj6) The video drew different reactions from two interracial couples that CNA Insider caught up with - their stories were first told 4 years ago on the programme On The Red Dot: Indian Catholic + Chinese Buddhist: https://youtu.be/9TujTdQX4R8 Malay Muslim + Chinese Catholic: How An Interracial Marriage Works: https://youtu.be/_rzEwer2108 While Indian-Chinese couple Martin Silva and Esther Low were surprised that such overt racism still exists, Malay-Chinese couple Norsham Husaini and Anne Chua were not. In this video, the couples tell us about encountering racial presumptions that Singaporeans make, winning parental acceptance only years after their marriage, and learning what it's like for their partner who's of the minority race.
