In April 2021, Indonesia’s navy submarine, KRI Nanggala 402, plunged into the sea of Bali during a routine training exercise, killing all 53 crew on board. The 40-year-old vessel was found from the depth of more than 800 metres, split into three parts. The tragedy is the Indonesian Navy’s worst peacetime loss, and one of history’s deadliest submarine disasters. The loss of the submarine has put into question President Joko Widodo’s vision to turn Indonesia into a global maritime power. It’s also facing challenges on multiple fronts, including illegal fishing activities, transnational crimes and terrorism. Can Indonesia realise its vision of becoming a global maritime power with its ageing naval fleet?
