Five decades ago on the 7th of March, leader of the Awami League, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh, then known as East Pakistan. The proclamation led to a brutal crackdown by the Pakistani army on the people of Bangladesh. 3 million people were killed as Asia's new nation emerged into an uncertain future through mayhem and war. 50 years after its birth, Bangladesh has now emerged as one of the fastest growing economy in the world, overtaking even its closest neighbours, Pakistan and India. But is the nation still haunted by its traumatic past?
