Mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika, Chikungunya and dengue kill over a million people each year, making mosquitoes the world’s deadliest creatures. Among the most dangerous species of mosquito is the Aedes aegypti, carrier of viruses that cause dengue and yellow fever. While common in tropical climates, the Aedes aegypti has begun spreading its range in the US. Climate change and warming temperatures have created suitable conditions for these mosquitoes to thrive in places where they normally would not, setting them on a collision course with major populations centres. Our war with the mosquito is bloody. Who can stop this menace? Meet the disease hunters, Dr Lawrence E. Reeves (University of Florida), Emeritus Prof Duane J Gubler (Duke-NUS’ Emerging Infectious Diseases Programme), Assoc Prof Sadie J. Ryan (University of Florida) and Assoc Prof Omar S. Akbari (University of California, San Diego), who are studying these pests, the diseases they spread, and fighting fire with fire.
