On 30 June 2020, China signed into law a controversial national security legislation for Hong Kong. The law gives Beijing unprecedented powers to crack down on a variety of political crimes in the semi-autonomous region. Opponents of the law argue that the new security legislation violates the city’s autonomy status, promised under the “one country, two systems” principle. Will the new National Security law usher in the death of freedom and bring an end to Hong Kong's autonomy? Will it eventually erode its status as one of the leading financial and trading hubs in the region? And if so, what does the future hold for the city once seen as the bastion of freedom in the region?
