Thousands of anti-regime activists in Myanmar have flocked from urban areas to the jungles to seek refuge and warfare training with ethnic armed organisations, in places like Chin state and Kayin state, with the goal of waging armed resistance against the military regime. A year ago, on Feb 1, 2021, the military seized control of the government from the democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD). Massive street protests and a Civil Disobedience Movement have led to brutal crackdowns, and many fear Myanmar is edging towards full-blown civil war. The shadow National Unity Government (NUG), made up of ousted elected lawmakers and representatives from ethnic minority groups, formed a military wing - the People’s Defence Force – which has been cooperating with some ethnic armed organisations in fighting the Tatmadaw, the Myanmar armed forces.
