What's Crave Nasi Lemak Got To Do With The CMIO Model?

Comedian and host Haresh Tilani speaks to Singaporeans of different races to hear their thoughts on the CMIO - Chinese, Mala, Indian, Others - model. Are they for or against it? Does having a ‘race’ category on our identity cards make sense if most of us are of mixed racial heritage anyway? The owner of popular nasi lemak brand CRAVE, Abdul Malik Hassan, for instance often is assumed to be a Malay, but he’s an Indian-Muslim with some Japanese blood on his grandmother’s side. This multiculturalism is reflected in the family nasi lemak recipe, which his Malik’s late father popularised when he ran his famous stall at Adam Road. Actress Munah Bagharib, whose grandfathers are both Arab, also thinks there is more to a person than a racial ‘tick box’. She talks about how race plays a part in her casting for roles. Opposition politician Nicole Seah, who is Peranakan Chinese, and Cabinet Minister Maliki Osman, who is MP for East Coast GRC, chip in on racial identity and minority representation in Group Representation Constituencies.
