On December 8, 2001, 6 Singaporean suspects were arrested in the country’s first ever homegrown terror plot. A video footage recovered by the Alliance forces in Afghanistan had detailed plans to attack American targets in Singapore. The detainees belonged to a clandestine terror group that operated in the region for decades, known as JEMAAH ISLAMIYAH - a regional affiliate of the global terrorist group, Al-Qaeda which carried out the terrorist attacks in the US on September 11, 2001. Incriminating information obtained from the 6 detainees also led to the arrests of 13 more people. The continuing security operation had effectively crippled the Singapore JI and thwarted multiple plots by the group to carry out terror attacks in the country.
