Is now the time for Indonesia to open up? While Europe is welcoming regional and international tourists, ASEAN nations have been wary about opening the gates even to fellow Southeast Asians. Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has called for an ASEAN travel bubble. But with vaccination rates varying drastically among ASEAN countries, how possible is such a regional travel bubble? The pandemic has shown how vulnerable countries are when they rely heavily on foreign visitors. Post-pandemic, does tourism need to change?
