19-Year-Old Flees Prostitution And Aces School Exams. Then COVID Happened

In Rani’s community in India, sex work is seen as the only viable future for girls. Her mother and sister are prostitutes. But the 19-year-old was determined that it not be her fate, so she fled with her younger sister to Delhi, where they enrolled in a school in hopes that education would give them a more secure future. Avnish Kumar is from a remote village, Narayanpur in Chhattisgarh, which has a low literacy rate. But he defied expectations, acing the senior high school examinations to get offers from several universities. He was admitted to Delhi University and was preparing for the civil service exams when COVID-19 struck. Both Avnish and Rani were forced to stop their education - and may never have the chance to resume it. UNICEF says school closures have impacted over 280 million students in India, almost half of them girls. Observers say that millions of young people risk being trapped in the cycle of poverty, unless the government can implement measures to pull the young back into schools and colleges.
