It's been five years since the Philippines launched its controversial drug war, and the death toll is rising. Thousands have lost their lives in police operations where officers say they killed suspects in self-defense and in vigilante-style killings. Meanwhile, in countries like Thailand and the United States, the drug trade is thriving despite COVID-19. Last year alone, a record 93,000 people died in the United States, from drug overdose. Among them, 70,000 died from an opioid overdose. In this first of a two-part series on CNA Correspondent, we take a closer look at the socio-economic and human toll of the drug scourge.
