If your boss asked you to ride in the back of a lorry, would you? A group of Singaporeans try it out - and quickly decide: No. “I felt like I was going to fall off,” said one. “I have a wife, I have a son,” said another. So are there double standards for migrant workers, who are transported this way every day? Since 1987, it has been illegal to transport passengers in the back of lorries - except to transport workers between the workplace and lodgings. Such vehicles must comply with certain safety requirements under the Road Traffic Act, but an online petition argues that such rules are outdated. In another Talking Point experiment, mannequins were used to show the dangers faced by passengers in the back of a lorry when it’s suddenly hit from behind, or it brakes suddenly. In the past 10 years, over 4,800 migrant workers have been killed or injured in lorry accidents. The Transport Ministry is now reviewing the enhancement of the safety measures.
