From Taiwan to Italy and Singapore, COVID-19 has presented new challenges to government efforts to boost low fertility rates. In Italy, deaths outnumbered births this past year with its population falling by 384,000 people - the equivalent of having lost a city the size of Florence in a year. Taiwan’s worst outbreak of COVID-19 is derailing couples’ plans to get married and have children in a year when the island is at risk of having the world’s lowest fertility rate. While in Singapore, we find out how a shortage of construction workers due to border closures has affected the country’s birth rate.
