Breathing New Life Into A Balestier Shophouse | Dream Spaces | Singapore Architecture




Shophouses have existed in Singapore since the 19th century. Balestier is home to many of these two-storey dwellings that traditionally housed businesses on the ground floor and homes above. One such 1920s unit in the neighbourhood has been transformed to the concept of co-living by local designers Scene Shang. It’s tastefully furnished and interiors inspired by Balestier’s rattan-weaving industries. The shophouse today is a boutique home where different residents live communally — similar to how early immigrants to Singapore did so in the past.
