About one car catches fire every two days - that’s an average of 200 car fires a year according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). Automotive experts estimate that about 95% of car fires occur due to electrical faults. For example, improper installations and rewiring your car to install add-ons like dash cams and powerful sound systems are fire risks. To avoid car fires, workshop owners, CJ Loo from Alpha Performance Drive and Shaun Seah from Alfa City suggest: 00:00 Service your car regularly and check for defects which may lead to car fires. 01:46 Avoid major car modifications, especially the illegal ones like methanol injection. A methanol-water injection kit is a fast and cheap method to increase the horsepower of car engines. However, the additional power may create more heat which leads to overheated engines - another cause of car fires. These methanol injection kits are illegal in Singapore. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) stated in response to CNA: “We have not issued any notices for offences involving the use of methanol or nitrous injection kits in the last five years. The use of such injection kits may adversely affect the safety and exhaust emissions of the vehicle and is not allowed. We strongly advise vehicle owners to check if their planned modifications comply with LTA’s guidelines before proceeding. Any person, including workshops, who illegally modifies or uses such vehicles can be fined up to S$5,000, imprisoned up to 3 months, or both. The penalties for repeat offenders are doubled.” WATCH the full episode of #TalkingPoint Car Fires: What Causes Them And How To Prevent One?
