Why I'm Moving Back To Aceh, 17 Years After The Tsunami

How has Aceh recovered from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami? Seventeen years after the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami leveled the coastline of the Indonesian province, killing over 167,000 folks, capital city Banda Aceh is once again bustling - and even more densely built than before. Raihan Lubis, 46, is finally returning to settle down with her husband and three children, aged 17, 14 and 4. She first set foot in Aceh in 2000 as a journalist covering the separatist insurgency, and survived the tsunami. She left Aceh in 2007 and has since worked as a media consultant for various humanitarian organisations in Bali, Jakarta and Ubud. In 2017, she published Siti Kewe, a book about a coffee farmer in Banda Aceh whose life was changed after the tsunami. With international aid totalling billions, Banda Aceh has since been rebuilt with over 140,000 new homes and 4,000km of new roads - and a larger population of 268,000, more than even the pre-2004 population of 240,000. But many residents still live in homes that are vulnerable to disaster, for instance built by the sea. This fuels wider concerns that Indonesia - which sits in the infamous ‘Ring of Fire’ of tectonic activity - may not be fully prepared with mitigation measures for yet another natural disaster in the chain of recent catastrophes, such as the Lombok and Palu earthquakes of 2018. As one Kompass journalist put it: “I am afraid that there could be a more devastating event than the 2004 tsunami if it is not mitigated earlier.” WATCH the full #Insight episode: Life After Disaster: Indonesia https://cna.asia/3oJAqQR ALSO WATCH: Picking Up The Pieces After The 2004 Aceh Tsunami | One Day That Changed Asia https://youtu.be/JLGT8pa8t-I Divers Turn Post-Earthquake Heroes In Gili Islands https://youtu.be/1GUL2P0JfmM Military In Politics: Indonesia | Insight https://youtu.be/Dq1MfX81wCw For more, SUBSCRIBE to CNA INSIDER! https://cna.asia/insideryoutubesub Follow CNA INSIDER on: Instagram: https://ift.tt/2C3sZiR Facebook: https://ift.tt/2PPEuNA Website: https://cna.asia/cnainsider
