On 23 May 2017, ISIS-linked Filipino militants invaded Philippine’s southern city of Marawi. They took hundreds of civilians as hostage while others fled the city for their own survival. What followed next was a five-month long urban warfare between the militants and the government forces. The siege left the entire city in ruins as a result of the clashes and periodic bombings.
