In 1960, a young Jane Goodall flew to Africa to study primate behaviour. Against all odds in a male-dominated field, she became a world-renowned natural scientist. Her ground-breaking work over 60 years showed close links between humans and chimpanzees. The world was startled to learn that the use of tools was not limited to mankind and that humans are neither separate nor superior in the animal kingdom. At the age of 87, Goodall is still pushing boundaries. She argues that our disrespect for nature has caused diseases to cross over from animals to humans, like in the COVID-19 pandemic. In this interview with CNA, Jane Goodall tells Lin Xueling how saving wildlife will save humankind.
