A Palace And A Family Mansion: Repurposing Historic Buildings | Dream Spaces | CNA Documentary

As Singapore's population grew during the colonial era, so did housing types. While most of the population stayed in shophouses and kampongs, the wealthy and influential built grand houses that reflected their lifestyles. They often came in the form of European-style houses that were modified for the tropical climate. The Istana Kampong Gelam was built in the 1840s for the Sultan of Singapore in the then-popular Palladian-style. In the early 20th century, prominent philanthropist Tan Soo Guan built a Victorian-style bungalow at East Coast. Another distinct housing type was the barracks built by the British to house its growing military presence as Singapore became a lucrative trading hub. Today, several of these historic houses have been conserved and transformed.
