At 15, Zack (not his real name) was caught for theft and aiding unlicensed money lenders. He was sentenced to 27 months’ probation. Every fortnight, Zack attends counselling sessions with his family, hosted by an officer from the Probation and Community Rehabilitation Service of the Ministry of Social and Family Development to help reconcile his strained relationship with his parents. They believe his aggressive behaviour both at home and in school is influenced by his gang-affiliated friends, while Zack finds himself unable to communicate how he truly feels towards his parents without being reprimanded. Zack was referred to the Institute of Mental Health and found to have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). With proper medication and guidance from his probation officer, Zack’s relationship with his parents is improving, and his anger is better managed through cognitive behavioral therapy.
