Is Malaysia’s state of emergency declaration a necessary measure to contain the coronavirus pandemic, or a political move by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to hold on to power? The Malaysian King, Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, declared a state of emergency on January 12, 2021, on the advice of PM Muhyiddin. It is set to last till August. The number of #COVID19 infections hit a record high in January, with more than 3,000 cases daily. Political analysts argue that the emergency declaration was politically-driven. It came at a time where an increasing number of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) Members of Parliament (MPs) were withdrawing their support for PM Muhyiddin. With the backing of only 109 MPs out of 222, PM Muhyiddin’s government was in a politically precarious spot. As the parliament is suspended during the state of emergency, no snap elections nor no-confidence motion can be pushed through. The nationwide emergency law has been invoked twice before, in September 1964 during the confrontation between Malaysia and Indonesia and again in May 1969 during the racial riots.
