How Dead Pets On Beaches Led Me To Pet Smugglers In Hong Kong: Undercover Asia Producer’s Diary

CNA Correspondent Wei Du, a new dog parent, speaks about her investigation for #UndercoverAsia on pet carcasses appearing mysteriously on the beaches of Hong Kong. In August 2020, dead pet dogs and cats in cages and pet carriers were found washed up on the beaches of Hong Kong. Over 10 carcasses were found on Lamma Power Station Beach and St Stephen’s Beach in Stanley. The Hong Kong Marine Police believes that these pets were smuggled from China to Hong Kong to be sold. In an attempt to evade authorities, the smugglers may have thrown the pets into the sea, or the pets may have fallen out of the boat. The COVID-19 pandemic posed another opportunity for pet trafficking. As overseas Chinese returned home, there were few flights that allowed pets onboard. Wei Du recounts speaking to a pet owner who used a pet immigration agent who claimed to have lost his cat in transit via Hong Kong. 00:00 Wei Du on getting a Shibu Inu during lockdown 00:47 how she came across the news of dead pets washed up on beaches of Hong Kong 02:07 The Hong Kong Marine Police on why these dead pets are appearing on Hong Kong’s beaches. 02:30 Wei Du’s meeting with an alleged pet smuggler to “adopt a cat”. 05:12 Wei Du talks about how the pets are trafficked while transiting through Hong Kong.
