The old Sungei Road market was a popular flea market for eclectic goods ranging from elephant sperm fossils, lacquered jewellery boxes to vintage CDs. It started in the 1930s and by the 70s, it became the go-to place for cheap goods and trinkets. The market was closed in 2017 to make way for redevelopment. Up to 300 peddlers lost their stalls. These ex-vendors retired, took on odd jobs or moved to other smaller flea markets scattered around Singapore.
