Still “Feels Like Jail”? Life for Foreign Workers Nearly 1 Year On In Singapore

It’s been 11 months since the COVID-19 pandemic hit dormitories across Singapore, resulting in a months-long lockdown. Talking Point speaks to dorm residents and gets them to film what life is like inside these confines now, to see if things have changed. At some dorms, communal eating facilities and playgrounds are still out of bounds. Beyond going out to work, workers have to spend most of their time in their rooms, with only about 3 hours allowed outside on their day off at recreation centres. Kong Chee Min, the CEO of Centurion Corporation, in charge of Westlite Accommodation dormitories, maintains that these restrictive measures are important to reduce crowding from co-mingling of dormitory workers, effectively mitigating infection rates. Martin Koh, deputy chief of ACE GROUP from Singapore Manpower Ministry says that plans have been made to increase the frequency of visits to recreation centres. On top of that, 7 Quick Build Dorms have been launched, which improve the current living conditions of workers. More dorms will be built over the next course of the year, increasing the number of bed spaces to about 25,000.
