Singaporeans React When Told To Return Their Trays: A Social Experiment

What would make Singaporeans return their food trays when they’re done eating? In separate scenarios, #Talking Point sees what happens when a) cleaners at a hawker centre don’t clear the tables but remind patrons to do so instead, b) diners are asked to pay a deposit on trays to be refunded upon return, and c) a flashing alarm at the table reminds them when they get up to go. In the first social experiment, the cleaners end up being scolded and abused with vulgarities, even though 40 per cent of trays were returned, up from the usual 10 per cent. Hawkers too are frustrated by the dirty tables that deter business. In the second scenario, the National Environment Authority (NEA) has implemented an automated tray return system in nine hawker centres, due to be rolled out to more than 25 centres in the next few years. But hawkers find it troublesome having to explain the system to diners, and enduring unhappy reactions. Host Diana Ser then teams up with Transforma Robotics and Loo Deliang, Associate Director (Analytics & Behaviour Change), at the National University of Singapore to create an alarm reminder. The result? A 66 per cent tray return rate, up from the usual 5 per cent.
