In 2019, Chinese students made up a third of the 1.1 million foreign students in the US. But with the US-China rivalry and racism on the rise, the visas of many Chinese students and scientists are now in danger. From 2008 to 2018, American universities wooed students from China, who generated close to US$14 billion for US colleges and effectively helped subsidise the education of Americans. At the University of Iowa, local students pay only a third of the rates that their international peers do. In May 2020, the White House released a report alleging that “PRC authorities use some Chinese students, mostly post-graduate students and post-doctorate researchers, to operate as non-traditional collectors of intellectual property.” As a result, US student visas granted to Chinese applicants fell by 99%, from 90,410 in 2019 to 808 in 2020. Li Guanhong, a Chinese national student at the Univeristy of Iowa, notes that this looming visa issue makes it difficult for him to focus on his studies, as he has to scrutinise the news for new regulations every day, in fear of being deported. Students from China aren’t the only ones viewed as spies or saboteurs. China-born particle physicist Yangyang Chen, who works on the Large Hadron Collider, a multinational initiative, has noted a rise in racism against Chinese people in America since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, likening it to “how Muslims and brown people felt after 9/11.” She thinks the US-China rivalry hinders the global collaborative effort needed to solve problems like climate change.
