Do you return your food trays after meals? Are most Singaporeans unappreciative of the work that cleaners have to do? A hawker representative from Berseh Hawker Centre said that only 2-3 diners out of 10 would return their food trays despite multiple advertisements and banners put up around the hawker centre. In this #TalkingPoint episode, host Diana Ser, takes on a 4-hour shift as a hawker centre cleaner. She has to clear food waste, food trays, sanitise tables and return utensils to the respective stalls. When asked, many diners said that it was the job of the cleaners to clear the trays and return the utensils. Other than indicating a lack of social grace, uncleared food trays may transmit bacteria like E. Coli and Salmonella - or animal-borne viruses when birds eat the food scraps.
