Minoru Kawaguchi's family history has always been shrouded in mystery. As a fourth generation Japanese-Singaporean, he knows little about the generations before him - especially from before the war. And that mystery is further intensified when Minoru discovers an old suitcase belonging to his grandfather that offers a glimpse of his life as a young man. Which only makes Minoru more curious - what was his grandfather's early years like? How about his parents, the first generation who migrated from Japan? Determined to find out more, Minoru embarks on an emotional journey of discovery. From the role his granduncle played in saving a man's life during the Japanese Occupation, to the existence of a large pre-war Japanese community situated in Bugis called Little Japan, Minoru unearths information about his family as well as the wider Japanese community he never knew before, and learns that the story of the Japanese in Singapore is far bigger and older than the events of WWII.
