Why Aerial Silks Dance Inspires This Engineering Innovator

He’s a research engineer, an innovator, and a don at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with an unusual hobby his academic colleagues find odd - performing on aerial silks. Associate Professor Duong Hai Minh, 46, describes it as a “combination of physics and dance”, incorporating concepts like gravity and momentum, and one that teaches him focus, which is essential to his work in the laboratory where he comes up with ground-breaking innovations. For example, he and his team came up with an aerogel converted from plastic bottle waste. Watch more about it here: https://youtu.be/Dg5QK6PZca4 . It not only has the potential to address the world’s plastic pollution problem, but the PET aerogel is also a super-efficient heat and sound insulator, and can be used to absorb oil spills. His team has also found ways to similarly convert textile and food waste.
