With the disruption of global air travel and tourism, and a COVID-19 ‘circuit breaker’ enforced in Singapore all leading to zero sales, how could walking tour company Lion Heartlanders survive? Founder Byron Koh’s answer was to team up with ‘competitor’ Monster Day Tours and make a creative pivot - to conducting virtual live tours on Zoom. He was inspired by platforms like Airbnb and Craft Tabby, which were offering online experiences. His interactive tours, mainly catering to schools and corporations, take participants to places like Little India and Singapore’s maritime port in relative safety during a pandemic. But he also got help to retain his staff from the Jobs Support Scheme (JSS), which was first introduced at Budget 2020 and enhanced in the Resilience, Solidarity and Fortitude Budgets. This, along with the SGUnited Mid-Career Pathways Programme, meant he could even create three new full-time jobs. The company also tapped into the Singapore Tourism Board’s Marketing Partnership Programme.
