Are wet markets a dying trade? A 2019 NEA survey found that 2 in 5 Singaporeans had not visited a wet market in the past year. And when COVID-19 circuit breaker measures kicked in in April 2020, stall-holders struggled as footfall plunged. Some vendors took to live-streaming online auctions and making deliveries. Tech-savvy business owners like Max Kee from Lian Huat Marketplace were able to successfully port their business from the wet market to the web market. Live-streaming from his stall in Jurong Fishery Port, he’s able to sell 1,000 to 2,000 items daily to online customers, moving large volumes in a short time. Launched on May 5, 2020, Tekka Online Market, a 2-day IMDA initiative, saw merchants like Chia’s Vegetables Supply try their hand at live-streaming. However six months after the launch, they stopped this service, citing difficulties with the technology, high delivery costs and manpower concerns. To bridge the “digital gap” between wet market vendors and online customers, TADA Fresh offers an online delivery service to wet markets. Host Ming Tan follows Dixie Sng, Head of Operations at TADA Fresh, to Pasar Bedok Central, on a quest to convince stall holders to adopt their service. Are these measures enough to save a sunset industry? Will stall holders be able to adapt in these trying times?
