Two of the biggest problems most food and beverage (F&B) businesses face, besides high rents, are manpower issues: Finding skilled workers and high labour costs. Can robots be the lifeline that restaurants, cafes and bars need to survive? At the new RATIO Robotic Cafe and Lounge at Centrepoint in Somerset, Singapore, three robotic arms make drinks such as Nanyang Kopi (coffee), Nanyang Teh (tea), lattes and cocktails like Lychee Martini, Old Fashioned and Cosmopolitan. There are options to customise your drinks for strength and sweetness. Renting one of these robots costs about as much as hiring a service staff, around S$2,500 to S$3,000 a month, but without the accompanying ‘human’ problems: A robot does not fall sick, will never take annual or medical leave, and can work 24/7. A Taochiew (master coffee brewer) and a bartender both agree that the robotic arms make more consistent drinks than a human but have different views on whether a robot could take over their jobs in the future.
