They take it to a local gas station where they make repairs. But they're hounded by some locals, who torment them relentlessly. One of them decides to stand up to the men, leading to a standoff that threatens to escalate into violence. But the girls have a secret weapon that they call upon to get the upper hand. Written and directed by David Mahmoudieh, this sci-fi short embraces the spirit of the 90s, both in the "riot grrrl" energy of empowerment and confrontation and a look and feel that takes inspiration from punk renegade dystopias like "Mad Max" films and even "Tank Girl," as well as the noir stylings that infused "Blade Runner." But this isn't a throwback or an exercise in nostalgia. With its control of high tension and its ultra-modern sheen, the craftsmanship feels more wide-lens and sleek than its antecedents. The camerawork is fluid and responsive; the cinematography is slick and stylishly lurid with its saturated, vivid colors. The narrative feels futuristic, and yet also timeless, managing to evoke to a world that seems both different and similar to ours while weaving a web of associations that should appeal to genre fans. The brass-tacks practicality and righteous anger of Julia and Jill, though, feels very relevant to now, and these qualities come to the fore as the storytelling puts them on a direct collision course with the tormenters, with well-modulated pacing and a compelling build-up to the key standoff at the climax that escalates so that viewers can't look away. It's essentially a long scene in narrative scope, but the ambition and accomplishment of the film's craft make it seem like a much bigger world, one that's still harsh and demanding of the women in it. Actors Poppy Drayton and Sierra Pond play the women with a certain heightened aplomb, just minding their business and then trying to set boundaries as they go about their lives. But when those boundaries are consistently ignored, they retain their composure -- perhaps because they know they have a trick hidden up their sleeve. Or rather, hidden in their pants -- or skirt, as it may. Watching that secret weapon reveal itself is an outlandish experience, one that's so bizarre and flamboyant that it's genuinely riveting. With a title like "Snake Dick," viewers know that this isn't a subtle film in both story, symbolism and execution, and its success isn't based in a well-revealed twist. Instead, the pleasure is all about the execution and watching a film really "go for it" in terms of delivering an entertaining, memorable viewing experience. The supremely self-assured style and boldness in vision in "Snake Dick" go a long way in bringing back the gonzo spirit that animates a genre heavily inspired by comics, anime and other free-wheeling narratives. But its unapologetic sense of empowerment makes it speak to the current cultural moment, especially in a time where equality and full autonomy for all genders still feels like a sci-fi utopian dream in many parts of the world.
