Farmers like Khalilur Rahman in India’s Assam state are used to anticipating floods. But this year’s monsoon rains were different – intense, giving no warning of flooding. “We had never found it so difficult before. The flood came thrice,” says the jute and rice farmer. Climate change is exacerbating extreme weather events in India, which is home to one-third of the world’s poor. And it is they who pay the heaviest price for global warming. “There is nowhere for me to go,” says Rahman. If I had money, I could have bought land in a place which could not be breached by floods...
