Today the government criminalises people for possessing drugs, but not so long ago they were the worst drug pushers in history and got China hooked on opium. The Opium Wars are considered in China to be the ‘years of humiliation’, but people in Britain barely know what they were. Britain waged war on China - twice - simply so it could keep on profiting from the opium trade. The two Opium Wars then led to one of the worst cases of national drug addiction in history.
