Between the US and China, the race to create an effective vaccine against the #coronavirus has become a political game. Being first to put out a vaccine could boost US President Donald Trump’s re-election bid. He launched Operation Warp Speed, a private-public partnership to accelerate COVID-19 vaccine development, which has pointedly excluded any Chinese vaccine developer. While Trump has been accused by Germany of trying to monopolise access to a vaccine, China’s President Xi Jinping has promised to make the first vaccine available to the world - a move that could boost China’s standing as the world’s most powerful country over the US. But will this US-China rivalry hamper efforts to find a solution to the pandemic?
