Hostess bars have been singled out as one source of Japan’s still spreading COVID-19 pandemic. Nationwide, there are an estimated 52,000 host and hostess bars and now, after several were identified as coronavirus cluster sites, government officials are warning people to stay away. But as these bars go out of business, the hostesses who depend on them are wondering how they will survive both the pandemic and the worst recession in years.
