In the Bengaluru Metropolitan Area, the average citizen spends more than 240 hours stuck in traffic every year. These severe delays pervade every aspect of life. Citizens are less productive, the air is dirtier, and goods and services are more expensive. Major parties’ campaigns promise to improve the overall transportation infrastructure. But without the general public holding them accountable to their pledges, progress on this issue remains slow. Surveys of consumers in India indicate that spurred by motivations of social distancing, concerns about health and hygiene in public transport, Indians are reporting a high desire to buy private vehicles – notably two-wheelers. With talk of dedicated bus lanes in the works, and a new one promised to be effective as soon as lockdowns ease down - is the garden city ready to return to its old ways?
