Building A COVID-19 Ward in 50 Days




The Singapore General Hospital’s newest infectious diseases ward is special in many ways. Named Ward@Bowyer for its proximity to the hospital’s Bowyer block, it was converted from an open air carpark to what it is today in just 50 days. Made of prefabricated isolation units that were shipped to Singapore from South Korea, it comprises 50 air-conditioned single negative pressure rooms with ensuite toilets. Patients here wearable bio-sensors and use in-room smartphones to call for help if needed. It opened to patients for the first time on Jul 15, 2020, and has doubled the hospital’s isolation capacity.
