
When General Gudin was buried in Smolensk at the start of Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia, minus the leg that had been smashed by a cannonball, there were numerous eyewitnesses. Since then however, no one has ever known where his grave lay. French and Russian archeologists each have their own views about the exact location of the body. Although they know success is never guaranteed in archeology, they join forces to dig around Smolensk Fortress over the summer of 2019, shadowed by an RTD crew. Gudin’s direct descendant, Alberic d’Orleans, has more than one poignant reason for hoping his ancestor will be found and brought home. As for Frenchman Pierre Malinowski whose brainchild the project was, the ex-soldier has moving plans for Napoleon’s friend.
