RTD correspondent Konstantin Rozhkov wrote to Julian Assange, held in the UK’s high-security Belmarsh Prison. The answer he sent back laid the foundation for RTD’s documentary on the WikiLeaks founder. “When I read it, I realised that the man who created WikiLeaks and revealed the world’s most terrible war secrets is in dire straits,” Konstantin says. This film traces Assange’s story from the very first leaks to his dramatic removal from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. It features key figures in the case and Julian’s life. From Australia to the UK, Konstantin travelled around the world and interviewed Julian’s father, John Shipton, his closest friends and supporters, including former Ecuadorian Consul to the UK Fidel Narvaez, Vaughn Smith, Angela Richter, and Johannes Wahlstrom. He also spoke with WikiLeaks lawyer Renata Avila, writer Suelette Dreyfus, journalist Mary Kostakidis, and filmmaker John Pilger. The Assange Story will premiere on February 24th, the very same day Julian Assange’s fate is to be decided in the first part of a landmark US extradition hearing in London.
