On August 5, 2019, the Indian government revoked Article 370 of the Indian constitution, which granted Jammu and Kashmir a special status, allowing for its own constitution, state flag, and autonomy over its administrative structure. Days later, Prime Minister Modi gave his first public response in justifying revoking the article. In his speech, Modi suggested that the current status of Jammu and Kashmir proved to be an obstacle for its development, and must be done away with. The administrative autonomy afforded by Article 370 effectively prevented welfare measures, such as minimum wage and education rights, to be implemented in the state. By revoking the article, India’s central government would effectively end corruption and other atrocities, and open the state for private investment and new industries, which would in turn provide new employment opportunities for residents. But is this how locals view the decision to revoke Article 370? We decided to ask them.
